The Group: Theren, Urindy, Floe, Jasper
Having picked up the trail of the young adventurers, the party moved with a renewed sense of urgency. Theren in particular seemed more agitated than normal over finding the body of the poor dwarf Crownshield.
After several hours of hard riding, the group came upon the scene of a pair of ogres apparently who had levied a toll upon the orcs. The pair were picking over a freshly slaughtered horse that could have only been one of the kids'. Wasting little time with pleasantries, the group spread out and once in position Theren hopped up on a rock and taunted the dim witted brutes into fighting him. Before they ever had a chance to do more than pick up their clubs, the warblade was closing the distance with them while at the same time Uri was doing the same in a pincher movement. As he charged, Theren waved his axe in a routine that somehow sent out waves of kinetic energy slicing through the air and felled the lead brute in a single blow, the dumbfounded look of shock on his face was more than enough gratitude for Floe whose spell had helped Theren accomplish that. Before his partner could even think to run away, Urindy was upon him weaving death with her daggers as they trailed flames from her burning blade maneuver. What had seemed a formidible challenge had ended before it quite got started yet the whole party prayed to the gods that their luck would stay with them.
Making camp for the night a short time later, the companions set watch and awaited the dawn knowing that time was against the scions.
The next day was fairly uneventful as they wound their way through the foothills of the moors. During the afternoon, they spotted an orc patrol that seemed to be moving away from them. Hoping that they might be part of a larger party, the group followed them until they reached a camp of sorts set into a bluff of the foothills. Sneaking forward to survey the scene, Uri spotted a handful of lean-tos surrounded by several orcs and something in a cage. Deciding it best not to leave such a large group behind, they came to the conclusion that they would simply have to fight this group. They began by trying to draw them away from the camp, unfortunately the orcs had other plans. Half of them quickly picked up crossbows and began firing upon the party while the other half released the boar-like beast from the cage and began quickly closing in upon them. Adapting quickly to the situation, the group moved to meet the charge of the orcs and boar. Theren and Urindy stepped up and engaged the lead orc and boar while Floe used their cover to step forward and breath a wave of frost upon the four charging orcs with swords, freezing them in their tracks and instantly killing them. With Jasper's boosting magic, the group was able to make short work of the large group but not without taking a few licks of their own. Wounded and with the day drawing to a close, the party decided to take shelter at the spot after dragging the bodies away and tossing them down the nearby ravine.
The next few days were spent chasing off hungry predators including a manticore intent on an easy snack and a troll on the hunt during the night, but all of this would not push them from their course as they finally were able to lay their eyes upon the ancient fortress of Xul-Jarak at dusk on the seventh day.
With the war drums of a gathering horde to be heard in the distance to the northeast, the heroes had to find a way inside the fortress without being overrun by the gathered forces.

First blood
The Group: (name, race, class, levels, character description)
Theren, Dwarven Warblade 4th. A master of control and defense, with axe and shield.
Urindy, Halfling Swashbuckler 4th. Graceful battle dancer, fights with paired weapons.
Floe, Human Sorceress 4th. Icy, with a mean streak. Lets her draconic side shine through.
Jasper, Halfling Bard 4th. The face of the group, plays a mean bongo.
The group has traveled to Melvaunt after being confronted by a guy who wants to hire their services. They agree, and follow to see Lord Woarsten Nanther. Lord Nanther asks them to find his missing son Oreal Nanther. The players are very suspicious from the beginning, however, they agree when Lord Nanther offers them 1.000 platinum pieces for the safe return of his son.
After scouring the city asking for hints of where the young Nanther and his friends have gone, they come to the conclusion that they have been sneaking away on trips to the countryside to play being adventurers. Unfortunately, it seems that this time something may have went wrong since they have yet to return to the city.
Next day they go to Melvaunt's northern gate where they are accosted by bravo's from the house of Leiyraghon. In the ensuing fight, both Floe and Uri are almost taken out before the group can pull together to kill or knock out the ruffians. It seems at least one of the houses doesn't like them sticking their noses into the business of the great houses. On a tip from Old Crowe, they pack their things and quickly head back to the north gate where Uri bribes the guard for info. He tells her that he saw a group take of north into Thar at night. The PCs decide to go after.
On the road to Glister, the moors of Thar are silent during the first day leading to a long and uneventful day. On the second day, they branch off onto a beaten mountain path heading straight into the foothills where they had noticed tracks of recent crossings. They had also gathered that this is where some of the increased orc activity had taken place recently.
Late in the afternoon with a fog enveloping their every sense, the party had little more warning than the whistle of a sling before Theren was pelted with stones. Pulling into a defensive formation around their animals, the group met the ambush of a pair of barbarous mountain orcs. While the group made quick work of the pair, it was not before Theren had sustained grievous wounds. Luckily, Jasper had just the right song to pep him up along with a potion of cure light wounds. Wary of another ambush, the group quickly found a camp site for the evening and the halflings did what they could to tend Theren's wounds.
Breaking camp at first light, the group had only been riding an hour or so before they came upon a grisly scene. An ancient hamlet whom nature had done well to reclaim was the site of a recent battle. Corpses littered the ground, and with that carrion had attracted scavengers large and small. It was the large that worried the party. Quickly noticing a hairy bulk shambling amidst the bodies making loud slurping and popping sounds as it went, the group decided to opt for stealth if at all possible to avoid this particular encounter and leave it to its meal. Unfortunately before this could happen, the beast picked up their movement and roared at the disruption of its meal.
Realizing the the beast wasn't going to let the get by, they quickly shifted their tactics to kill the thing as fast as possible. Uri quickly dashed in to land some stinging blows upon the great owlbear but she was beaten back quickly by a massive rake of it's huge claws. Only the quick thinking of the young sorceress Floe saved Uri as she quickly used a spell to swap Theren and Uri's places, the stout dwarf quickly went to work with his axe on the beast as Jasper launched into a song of courage and fight! Before Theren was able to swing again, the bear lifted him up into a fierce grapple and attempted to maul him to him he answered with a headbutt and a yell as he scrambled free of its grasp just as Jasper nailed it in the shoulder with a well placed crossbow bolt. Now free of the monster and none to happy, the good dwarf grinned a grin of madness as he hacked away with his dwarf-wrought axe leaving the creature in a pool of it's own blood.
"Back to the gates o'the Abyss with ye" he said, spitting on the corpse for good measure.
A quick search of the site revealed the poor Dorn Crownshield's body under a pile of orcs. Dorn was the known leader of the band of young adventurers. Noticing the tracks leading off to the north, the party quickly remounted and began the pursuit of the orcs knowing that time was against the captives.

Melvaunt
Character sheets are up after the first intro adventure. Just missing Uri's at this point. Feel free to post any and all fleshed out backgrounds for the characters in the comments section and I'll make sure to copy them onto the characters.
Our story so far:
The heroes have done a bit of investigating within Melvaunt looking for the lost scions. Is there foul play about or have the kids just run into more than they could handle somewhere? Tune in next week for more....

Welcome to the home front. I'll be trying to chronicle the adventures here at this spot as we go so you should check out the blog on a weekly basis. This will also be a spot to exhange ideas through the comments threads during downtime. I will keep a good bit of source material here as well for the players to be able to reference at any time they need, including character sheets.
Now sit back and enjoy the ride.
